Why I wrote SURVIVAL
In a world where disability is often misunderstood, one voice rises above the noise, advocating for respect and understanding. Through personal experiences and extensive research, I want to shed light on the misconceptions surrounding disability and offers a roadmap for change.
Respecting Boundaries:
I DO believe in the power of personal boundaries. In their compelling narrative, I emphasise the importance of respecting individuals' privacy and autonomy. They challenge the notion that disability should be a topic of public scrutiny, advocating instead for mutual respect and understanding.
Embracing the Social Model of Disability:
Drawing from the rich history of disability activism, Survival introduces readers to the Social Model of Disability. They highlight how societal barriers, rather than individual impairments, are the true obstacles faced by disabled individuals. By promoting inclusivity and challenging ableism, I aim to inspire readers to join the movement for change.
Language Matters:
In my exploration of language and disability, I urge for a shift in perspective. They reject labels that define individuals by their differences and instead advocate for language that focuses on eliminating discrimination and promoting equality. Through clear and thoughtful communication, demonstrates the power of words in shaping perceptions.
Empowering Change:
As I conclude in the book, where I issue a powerful call to action, I encourage readers to embrace a language of respect and understanding, dismantling barriers and creating a more inclusive society for all. With unwavering determination, I hope my work - not me - inspires others to join the fight against ableism and champion the rights of disabled individuals.
Are you ready to challenge societal norms and embrace diversity? Together, we can break down barriers, empower change, and create a society where everyone is valued and respected, regardless of ability.
